3 Floyds might be the most metal brewing company around. They have created beers for bands like Pig Destroyer and Municipal Waste, and their year-round beers are pretty brutal in their own right, with names like Arctic Panzer Wolf IPA and Zombie Dust Pale Ale.Each year they release a limited batch of their Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout, which is only available on Dark Lord Day. This year’s Dark Lord Day is April 27th and takes place at the 3Floyds brewpub in Munster, Indiana. If you’re unfamiliar with this style or particular beer, let this description be your guide:
Dark Lord is a gargantuan Russian Style Imperial Stout, with a reverse cascading head that starts out billowing the color of burnt oil like the Dark Lord rising from the black primordial beginnings. Its resonant vinous aroma has been described as cherries, sweet malt, molasses, burnt currants, plums with a port wine alcohol undertow. Mochachino notes buried within. Motor oil consistency, hellishly smooth yet divinely burnt and vinous. The first sip coats your palate with a palatial charred fruit and chocolate blanket. Alcohol burn wiggles its way down your throat with a thick body.
What better way to enjoy this hellish ale than while listening to some awesome music? They’ve lined up some great bands to play this year’s Dark Lord Day, as follows:
High On Fire
Municipal Waste
Pig Destroyer
Sweet Cobra
Lair Of The Minotaur
Bloodiest
Sounds like an awesome day, right? Of course it is. That’s why unfortunately tickets are already sold out for Dark Lord Day 2013. However, you might get lucky on the internet. A pair of tickets was put on eBay to raise money for the Irving Park YMCA and went for roughly about what 80 bottles of this beer would cost. Although they don’t distribute nationally, if you are in the Indiana or Ohio area, 3Floyds is worth checking out even on non-Dark Lord Days. If they can brew a beer for the likes of Municipal Waste and Pig Destroyer, who knows what they’ll come up with next!
Metal and beer go hand in hand. We know this. It’s always exciting when a band collaborates with brewers on a beer. I was totally envious of anyone who got to try New Belgium’s Clutch beer before it came out. But I’ll try to be more alert when the latest brew efforts between Kennesaw, GA breweries Burnt Hickory and Anderson Bros. arrive in bars and package stores, because it’s named after one of Raleigh, NC’s greatest exports, Corrosion Of Conformity.
I think this band is awesome, so I would be down to try this beer without even knowing what kind it was. However, this beer is going to have it’s own kind of greatness outside of being tied to C.O.C. as a rum-barrel-aged imperial raisin porter. There’s going to be a lot going on with the flavor profile of this beer, and I think I’m going to be almost as excited to try it as I was to check out C.O.C.’s latest record. The Burnt Hickory Facebook page describes it as “Think Cinnabon with balls” if that’s any indication of anything.
A video that Burnt Hickory recently posted online shows them brewing the beer and gives you a look at the barrel that it’s going to be aged in, where they say “it will be treated to a constant loop of the Technocracy EP for the duration of its stay.” I know how important music is when you’re brewing beer; I hope the oatmeal stout I brewed a few weeks ago reacts favorably to all the Pantera I was listening during the mash. But either way, I’ll certainly be trying to get my hands on a bottle of Corrosion of Conformity later on this year. In the meantime, go ferment over “The Doom” from C.O.C.’s latest self-titled record after the jump. Read more »
Man, the Swedish have everything. A bikini team, Amon Amarth, and now, their very own Motörhead beer. As if having their own wine wasn’t enough, Motörhead are branching out into beer. Motörhead Bastards Lager is available by the case via Sweden’s state liquor shop, Systembolaget. Sadly, that’s the only place in the world it’s available for now.
If you’re wondering what Lemmy Kilmister thinks of his own beer, he’s probably not even aware that it exists. First of all, we all know he’s a Jack Daniels kinda guy. And also, drummer Mikkey Dee is the only band member to offer a quote about the beer, saying “If you think you’re too old for rock ’n’ roll and to drink beer then you probably are. Pity, but that means all the more beer for us.” However, if the company selling the beer, Brands For Fans, really wants Motörhead fans to commit to the lager, they might want to start by spelling the drummer’s name right.
