Well, that fantasy was fun while it lasted. According to Pitchfork, Mike Patton and Justin Broadrick won’t be working on that crazy super graphic novel from Alan Moore. They were just expressing interest. Too bad, a news piece hasn’t made me jump out of my seat that fast in a long time. And I am not a fast seat-jumper-outer.
Thanks to Vince Neilstein at Metal Sucks for ruining a perfectly good holiday weekend.
Update: Yeah, it’s not happening.
File this one under “list of borderline crazy people you’d never think you’d see mentioned in the same sentence.” UK label Lex Records has announced a new multimedia project from Alan Moore, creator of the Watchmen and V for Vendetta graphic novels, and featuring contributions from Mike Patton and Jesu/Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick.
The deluxe package, which took me three reads just to picture, includes a semi-autobiographical “photographic novel”, a two hour audiobook as read by Moore and a score composed by Andrew Broder of alternative act Fog and spoken word artist Adam Drucker featuring highlights from Patton and Broadrick.
Lex Records founder Tom Brown says the grandness of the set was partly inspired by the discbox of Radiohead’s In Rainbows, a model he feels is necessary to supplement declining album sales:
“It’s grown out of our production values and the music we work on,” he says of the project. “We are being ambitious with it. By working with artists outside music, you can make releases that are really worthwhile.”
Although Brown says he doesn’t want this release to be “elitist” he says it’s important for indies to set up new revenue streams in the face of a declining CD market and small margins on downloads.
I, for one, can’t wait for the bastardized film adaptation starring a cheeky Sean Connery and a giant blue glowing penis, which Moore will refuse to acknowledge even exists.
