Ever heard of Nevershoutnever? That’s understandable if A) ‘re older than 16 and B) don’t possess a vagina. However, the group, led by 19 year-old Christopher Drew Ingle, is popular with tweens that like earnest acoustic emo-pop, and is currently on the Warped Tour. What’s this have to do with metal? Well, Ingle (who goes by Christofer Drew), has a metal side project called EATMEWHILEIMHOT! It’s likely a joke band, for several reasons. First of all, the band name, which is almost as bad a band name as Nevershoutnever. Secondly, the declaration on their MySpace page that “this is a joke that only we are in on.” Thirdly, all their songs have straight edge titles, like the download below, “xBurritox.” As far as the music? Not bad, actually. It’s little more than a breakdown, but it sounds vaguely Sumerian-esque, and if Psychostick, The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza and Iwrestledabearonce can be taken seriously as bands, this kid’s likely got a shot at a second career.

The Sword’s third album, Warp Riders, is coming in a little over a month (August 24 to be exact). The band describes the forthcoming album as a “space opera meets post-apocalyptic western.” Now you”ll get a chance to make that call, based on the album’s first single, “Tres Brujas.” It’s available for free download at the below link, so check it out and let us know what you think.
There will be a video filmed for the song as part of a video trilogy that the Austin band will be filming in Los Angeles next week (with the other songs being “Lawless Lands” and “Night City.” We’re guessing that based on the album description, space will be involved in at least one of the videos. There’s been a run of metally space videos in the last year or so. Mastodon’s “Oblivion” was all about space exploration, and if the trailer of “The Final Frontier” is any indication, the next Iron Maiden video that comes out tomorrow should have similar themes. But hey, as long as the music’s good, we don’t care, and “Tres Brujas” (which according to our Spanish lessons, is Spanish for “three brujas”) is a solid first taste of the album.
Hot on the heels of their three (!) appearances at the Bonnaroo Festival this past weekend (well, one was as their instrumental alter ego The Bakerton Group), Clutch have released a free live music sampler. The sampler will only be available until Sunday (6/20) and contains three tracks: Clutch’s “Let A Poor Man Be” and “The Regulator,” and The Bakerton Group’s “Last Orbit.” You can get the sampler by going here.
Clutch have three more U.S. dates before heading to Europe in July. Their remaining dates are:
6/17 Greenville SC, The Handlebar
6/18 Norfolk VA, Norva
6/19 Allentown PA, Crocodile Rock
Iron Maiden have announced via their website that they have a new album, The Final Frontier, coming out on August 17. To commemorate the new album, as well as the tour that starts in Dallas on Wednesday (9), they’re givingaway a free MP3 of the first single, “El Dorado.” The announcement temporarily crashed the band’s site when the song was first made available at 7pm EST. The new album was recorded by Kevin “Caveman” Shirley, who produced their last few albums, and was recorded in Compass Point Studios, which was there the band recorded their mid-80s masterpieces Piece of Mind, Powerslave, and Somewhere In Time.
The band also unveiled artwork for The Final Frontier. Instead of original artist Derek Riggs, the artwork featuring a futuristic looking Eddie (if it even is Eddie) in a space setting was illustrated by Melvyn Grant, who’s done several other Maiden album covers, like Fear of the Dark and Virtual XI.
“‘El Dorado’ is a preview of the forthcoming studio album,” frontman Bruce Dickinson said in a press release. “As we will be including it in the set of our ’Final Frontier World Tour’ (which opens in Dallas on June 9) we thought it would be great to thank all our fans and get them into ’The Final Frontier’mood by giving them this song up front of the tour and album release.”
Having a hard time working and trying to create a successful band? According to the government, there’s an easy solution – just quit your job! House speaker Nancy Pelosi recently gave a speech in which she said “musicians and other creative types could quit their jobs and focus on developing their talents because taxpayers would fund their health care coverage.” Now Metal Insider is not a political blog – not by a long shot. In fact, whenever politics come up, everyone turns into either Ted Nugent or Michael Moore, and it’s best to not get involved. However, this definitely brings up a debate.
Say what you will about the politics behind the new health care bill as a whole, but Pelosi’s logic about artists makes no sense. Some on the more conservative side are painting her as the devil incarnate for suggesting untalented lazy people can quit their job and live off the working people. But honestly, is there going to be any one person that takes that leap of faith only because of healthcare? Answer? No. Slacker types quitting their jobs to focus on their art were going to do it anyway, and the government has little to no bearing on that. But even if someone was to do that, in the best case scenario, this would only cover their healthcare. Unless every artist has a rich girlfriend/boyfriend or loyal family (think Anvil: The Story of Anvil), they’re going to have to keep a job somewhere to pay rent, buy food, and tools for their art, be it guitars, laptops, paintbrushes or whatever else. We’re not sure if her quote was being taken out of context or what, but it’s a strange statement to make.
This weekend will be NARM’s (National Association of Recording Merchandisers) annual convention in Chicago. Why should you care? Well, for the first time, they’re having a “Metal Meet-up” on Sunday, May 16. A little over a year ago, at Metal Insider/Mayhem Festival’s CMJ showcase (from back when we were BITPOM), brand new Roadrunner Records signing Mutiny Within played one of their first shows as a signed band. The New Jersey band (Jersey represent!!!) were solid then, but have come remarkably far in the year since. We saw them play once about three months ago, then once again about two weeks ago, and they’ve improved notably each time. Their sound is equal parts prog, power metal and new school metal. To draw a parallel to other bands on their label, imagine a jam session between Dream Theater and Killswitch Engage. Their album isn’t coming out until 2010, but now you can find out for yourself how they sound, since today only, Roadrunner is giving music fans a chance to download album opener ”Awake” for free. Go here to download it.
What do The Devil Wears Prada, Underoath and Shadows Fall have in common? They were all past recipients of free food and exposure from Taco Bell as part of their Feed The Beat program. In conjunction with the 2009 Video Music Awards, Taco Bell has launched this year’s search for 100 pop, indie and metal bands. All bands selected will receive a one month’s supply of Fourthmeal (otherwise known as $500 in Taco Bell Bucks).
Between now and Wednesday, September 30, interested bands can go to www.feedthebeat.com/feedthebeatsignup for details on how to enter and contest rules. As long as your band is touring this fall, has a dedicated fan base, and a band or MySpace Web site, they’re eligible. This year’s bands will be announced on October 21 via Twitter, Facebook and www.feedthebeat.com.
If you’re a touring band, especially one on an indie label, you’ll take all the tour support you can get, and since the Bell even has veggie options, this is a win-win for any band that’s selected.
Want to hear some black metal? Of course you do. Check out “Ghost of a Thousand Broken Blades,” from Metal Blade’s newest signing, Lightning Swords of Death.

The Los Angeles band will be playing New York City on Monday August 17 at Precious Metal night at Lit Lounge. “Ghost of a Thousand Blades” is taken from the band’s first CD, The Golden Plague, which is available here. Look for a new album from them in 2010.
