Originally hailing from Tempe, AZ, Vektor describe themselves as “prog-thrash from space.” And it’s evident after one listen that the band’s music is thematically influenced by science fiction. So who better to determine the most metal sci-fi films than a member of Vektor? With that in mind, bassist Frank Chin [center right in the picture above] was kind enough to share with us which five sci-fi flicks are truly the most metal. Check out his picks by clicking the page numbers below, and take a look at the dates below to see if Vektor will be playing a town near you this month (more to be announced shortly).

Crazy to think how within a few hours, we suddenly had TWO Black Flag reunions to choose from. Hell, even one version of the punk icons plan to record a new album. But the circumstances of the multiple Black Flags aren’t entirely new. While everyone prefers to remember successful comebacks, there have been plenty of reunions that have taken a few unexpected or odd turns. With that in mind, we decided to list metal and rock’s top five reunions that had a bizarre twist to them.

Earlier today, a sneak peak of Guns N’ Roses’ 3D concert film was released online. The clip (which as you can see above is really just the new GN’R performing “Paradise City”) comes less than a week after Metallica announced the theatrical release of their own 3D film. Granted, there are still many who feel that 3D films from either band (or any group for that matter) are completely unnecessary. Still, these two 3D updates got us to thinking… what other hard rock/metal bands should considering releasing a 3D concert film?
Click on the page numbers below to see which five bands we think could pull off making a 3D film.

As you likely know by now, Black Sabbath revealed that their new album 13 was recorded with Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave drummer Brad Wilk. The announcement came as a surprise to many, though most are simply still upset that Sabbath’s first album with Ozzy Osbourne in 35 years won’t be with Bill Ward. However, picking Wilk to play on the album makes sense.
In fact, we can think of five reasons why having Wilk in the studio was a logical choice. So click on the page numbers below to read our reasoning behind Sabbath’s pick in studio drummers.

Last week, the metal world was thrown for a loop when Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano left the band to concentrate on his production work. Actually, it was the second time Caggiano had left the band, as Dan Spitz had a brief two-year reunion with the band from 2005-2007. That got us to thinking about the many replacements that bands have had, and how they’ve fit in. Caggiano had a great run with the band, and had been in the band long enough that a casual fan might think he’d been in the band from the beginning. With that in mind, we decided to make this week’s list about the top replacements in bands. Our one rule was that the replacement had to be assuming the role from someone that had played on at least one album, which would explain why Kirk Hammett isn’t on this list. We realize that this is just scratching the surface, so feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below. Click on the page numbers below to see who made it onto this week’s Top 5, as well as a few honorable mentions.

Chances are you likely know Liv Jagrell best as the voice of Swedish heavy rockers Sister Sin. What you might not know, though, is that when the powerhouse vocalist isn’t on the road, she’s a personal trainer/fitness teacher back home in Sweden. So given that all of our waistlines will be getting slightly bigger thanks to the holiday season, we couldn’t think of anyone better than Jagrell to help suggest some metal work out music.
Jagrell was kind enough to list her five favorite metal albums to break a sweat to, as well as provide work outs she recommends doing while listening to metal. See which albums she picks by clicking on the page numbers below. And don’t forget to catch Jagrell and Sister Sin on the road (in support of their new album Now And Forever) with metal queen Doro starting February 2013.

Hard to believe it, but Thanksgiving is just a few days away. With that in mind, we decided to continue a tradition we started last year and list the top five events we’re thankful occurred in 2012. Sure, 2012 was filled with its fair share of lows (we’ll discuss those another time). Despite this, though, there was still plenty for metal fans to be thankful for. So without further ado, click on the page numbers below to see the five things we’re happy to see happen in 2012.

Earlier this morning, we discovered that Def Leppard will be performing a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. This comes after fellow 80’s mainstays Motley Crue and Guns N’ Roses’ residencies at the same Las Vegas establishment. And in truth, it’s a win/win situation for both fans and bands. Fans get the chance to see these groups (who normally pack arenas) in a smaller venue and likely an extended/more elaborate set. Meanwhile, the bands get a nice paycheck, perform in a quality venue, and don’t have to travel. In fact, it’s surprising more hard rock groups don’t do residencies.
That got us to thinking: which heavier bands or artists could hypothetically pull off a Las Vegas residency? Who could pull off an over-the-top, Las Vegas worthy show and be able to draw a crowd night after night? Well, click on the page numbers to see which heavy groups we think could pull it off in this week’s Top 5.

Even if you’re not from America, you’re probably aware that tomorrow is election day. We’re a metal site, not a political one, but if you’re an American, it’s your civic duty to vote. There’s lots of people that think their vote doesn’t matter or count, but at some point, you’re probably going to give a shit about something the President and congress have a hand in. While we’re going to step off our soapboxes, there are plenty of musicians that have no qualms about being political, and not even all of them are named Lemmy. So here’s our rock the vote (or vote or die) version of this week’s top five.

As we write this from Metal Insider headquarters, Hurricane Sandy is bearing down on us.. It’s supposed to be the worst storm in 100 years. Will it be? Let’s hope not, but if this is the last you hear from MI for a few days, you’ll know why. Until then, we’re at your service, and with the storm on our minds, here’s our list of top five (mostly) hurricane/natural disaster-related songs.
