Why should major label bands be the only ones who get love? Unsigned & Streamed is a column where we stream a song from an unsigned band we at Metal Insider really dig.
This week, we’re excited to bring you New Jersey’s Thanatotic Desire. Though first launching in 2007, this quartet started to gain strength following the release of their 2011 full-length debut Deathwish. That same year, Thanatotic Desire played the Summer Slaughter Tour’s stop at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ. The group would go on in 2012 to win the “Headbang for the Highway” battle of the bands, earning the chance to play at Mayhem Fest’s Camden, NJ stop. Last year also saw them release the EP Silence To Violence, which has seen lots of love from Sirius XM’s Liquid Metal. If Children Of Bodom incorporated more old-school thrash riffs to its music, then you essentially have Thanatotic Desire. Take a listen to the group’s current single off of Silence To Violence called “Final Breath” below.

Thanatotic Desire aims to finish recording their second full-length, With Murder In Mind, this coming summer and fall. The band will be hitting the road soon for North American dates, including California dates with Whiplash this July. Check out Thanatotic Desire’s upcoming dates below (with more to come). This week, we’re kicking the door down to bring you Swedish death metal act Deathening. Based in Gothenburg and Malmö, Deathening came together in 2007 as a collaboration between professional sound engineers/producers Pål Callmer and Arnold Lindberg. Though they had made names for themselves behind a mixing console – in fact, Lindberg has acted as a tour engineer for In Flames, The Haunted, Destruction and Europe – Callmer’s guitar skills and Lindberg’s drumming needed a place to shine. They recruited guitarist Niklas Fridh, bassist Par Hallgren and former Embraced vocalist Kalle Nimhagen to fill out the quartet, releasing debut Open Up and Swallow in 2011. Deathening has returned now to release its follow-up, Chained in Blood, through the band’s own Rakamarow imprint. The band reached back into times of Swedish death legend to recruit Orvar Saftstrom (Entombed, Nirvana 2002) for his first vocal performance since 1991; he guests on the grinding, thrashing, sickening new single “The Living Burn,” which you can listen to below.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Deathening’s Chained in Blood will be out digitally and on CD and vinyl May 15th, with Record Heaven providing worldwide distribution. The video for opening track “Self Impaled” is streaming on Metal Injection now, and “Terminal Retribution” is up on the band’s Facebook page. Both “Self Impaled” and “The Living Burn” will be available on iTunes May 1st. More information on the band can also be found on its website.

This week, we’re shining a light on Philadelphia’s Surgeon. This prog rock/metal trio first gained critical acclaim with its 2008 debut Angry Guest, recorded with famed engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard, Neurosis). Since then, Surgeon has gained a strong following in the city of brotherly love’s live scene. And on May 21, the group will release its sophomore follow-up Chemical Reign, co-produced by Kevin Antreassian (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Mike Portnoy, Foxy Shazam) at Backroom Studios in New Jersey. Surgeon takes Mastodon riffs and injects them with a heavy dose of prog rock. Listen to the song “Deadly Are The Words” for yourself in the stream below. Then if you really like it, download the song for FREE here.

Surgeon will be celebrating the release of Chemical Reign in advance on May 19 with a show at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia. Stay updated on the group’s upcoming plans via their website and Facebook page.

This week on Unsigned & Streamed, we’re spotlighting the Long Island, NY-based death/doom/thrash melting pot that is Killjoy. Over the course of six years of existence, the four-piece has shared the stage with well-known bands such as Fear Factory, Otep, Suffocation and Deicide. The band’s debut album, Grow Deep, is now available through the Killjoy website; there’s a noticeable tinge of sludge and hardcore that Long Island natives will know well mixed with Opeth-like progressiveness, but their unmistakable blending of death, thrash and doom riff templates in equal order reminds us quite a bit of Byzantine. Killjoy and Byzantine together – now that would be a tour package we’d like to see!
Check out the first single from Grow Deep, “Ergaster,” for yourself in the stream below.

Killjoy will be touring the Northeast in late spring, with dates to be announced via the band’s Facebook page.

This week on Unsigned & Streamed, we’re excited to share with you Dallas’ own Seeker. Formed in late 2011, the group released their debut EP The Antagonist last spring for free via Bandcamp. And since then, Seeker has been taking the metal community by storm, recently catching the attention of Lambgoat and Bloody-Disgusting. Singer Bryce Lucien describes Seeker’s sound as “fast, aggressive, pissed off heavy metal.” And we’d say that’s pretty dead on. Imagine the brutality of Meshuggah blended with Old Man Gloom, and you have something similar to Seeker. Check out Seeker’s latest single “Alone” (featuring Corey Bennet of Bermuda) for yourself in the stream below.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Seeker just kicked off a West Coast tour with U&S alums Corelia and I, Omega. Check out a rundown of remaining dates for the tour after the jump, and keep up to date on Seeker’s upcoming plans via their Facebook page. Read more »

This week on Unsigned & Streamed, we’re losing our minds over the riff-driven hell Atlanta’s Palaces has given us. The trio’s debut, Tarnish, is out now on the band’s own Organism Records. Palaces has a lot in common with Mastodon’s dark progressive prowess and Neurosis’ stone-heavy sludginess, but there’s a noticeable dash of hardcore and even crust-punk here that fans of Converge and Coliseum are sure to appreciate. They’re a tricky band to classify, straddling the gap between multiple sub-genres of heavy music as if Kvelertak had grown up next door to Quicksand. Maybe it’s best to think of them as more concise, crustier cousins to KEN Mode, who they’ve shared the stage with in the past. But we’ll let the music do the talking; check out Tarnish’s blistering opening track, “One,” streaming below.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Palaces’ debut album Tarnish is available as a digital download or as a grey marbled colored vinyl 12″. Both versions can be bought directly from the band’s Bandcamp, and you can keep up with the band through their Facebook page.

This week on Unsigned & Streamed, we’re psyched to bring you Reaping Asmodeia as they come tearing out of Minneapolis to command attention. The progressive/technical deathcore band’s first album, Poison of the Earth, is due out early next year with mixing and mastering by Zack Ohren (All Shall Perish, As Blood Runs Black). Having already shared stages with Despised Icon, After the Burial, Periphery, Revocation and Misery Index, Reaping Asmodeia will be supporting Veil of Maya locally for two dates in December. With a sound somewhere between Veil of Maya’s work and that of Whitechapel, Reaping Asmodeia still retains plenty of originality to stand out among the clones in their genre and make an immediate impression. Check out the title track from Poison of the Earth in the stream below.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Until the rest of the album hits in the next few months, you can keep tabs on Reaping Asmodeia through their Facebook and ReverbNation pages.

It’s always exciting to see a band you’re a fan of get signed, and that’s just happened to Vancouver’s Anciients. The quartet, who we featured in Unsigned & Streamed back in January when they only had one “i” in their name, have signed to Season of Mist and have finished mastering their debut album for release in 2013. The band’s progressive and aggressive style slayed us back then, and we can’t wait to hear what they unleash next year.
“We are honored to have Season of Mist release our debut, the fact that they chose us and believe in us means the world,” the band said in a statement. “We are proud to represent them and have them representing us as artists, and look forward to working with them for years to come.”
“I’ve been listening to records from this label since the 90′s,” guitarist and vocalist Chris Dyck told us. I could not be more amazed and stoked.”
You can listen to the band’s debut EP, Snakebeard, via their Bandcamp Page.

This week, we’re excited to show some love for Seattle’s Numbers. Formed in early 2011 as the brainchild of vocalist/keyboardist Kyle Bishop, this four piece band quickly started to turn heads online with self-produced music videos and their live performances. They’ve already shared the same stages with bands like 7 Horns 7 Eyes and Hands Like Houses. And in June, the band released their debut self-titled EP. Numbers’ sound reminds us of the best qualities in djent metal; vocals packed with emotion and guitar riffs with clout. So without further ado, listen to “Ice On Fire” in the stream below.

Numbers plan to spend the rest of the year touring in support of their self-titled EP. To listen to more music from Numbers, head over to their Bandcamp and Facebook page.

This week, we’re showing some extra love for Vancouver’s Dig Your Graves. Since forming in early 2011, this four piece group has made quite the buzz in their local metal scene with their debut EP Majesty. They’ve shared the stage numerous times with the best Vancouver has to offer (including U&S alum Ancients). Dig Your Graves’ sound has the hardcore elements of Converge with Cancer Bats’ southern sludge edge. So without further ado, listen to the song “Lust” in the stream below.

In addition to filming a video for the first single off of their EP, Dig Your Graves is planning to record and write material for a new record. A tour of Western Canada, Vancouver Island and the U.S., along with numerous festival appearances, is also in the works.
