It’s been four years to the day since Tool’s last album, the awesome 10,000 Days, came out, which is actually only 1461 days. But the band isn’t letting the fact that they don’t have a current album stopping them from touring this summer. Tool is the Grateful Dead of heavy music, both because they have annoying fans that border on cult fanatics, and because they don’t need to have an album out to tour and sell out. However, unlike the Dead, their singer is still alive and they always put on an amazing show. Theprp.com suggests that initial dates see them playing Canada and secondary markets, while their official site only lists Canadian dates, which go on sale this Friday. More dates will be announced shortly, with an on-sale date of May 8.
In other Tool-related news, singer Maynard James Keenan revealed via his Twitter account that he’s working on an album compiling the music that appears in his documentary Blood Into Wine.
Working on compiling the tracks that appeared inwww.BloodIntoWine.com Should be available late Summer. “Songs into Blood into Wine.”
The documentary, which chronicles Keenan and winemaking mentor Eric Glomski’s efforts into turning Arizona into winemaking territory via his Merkin Vineyards, will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray on September 7. More information about that here. Hit the jump for the tour dates. Read more »
Cities announced so far include Albuquerque, Austin, Boston, Davenport, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and Sonoma. Future releases and DVD dates have not yet been released. Check the jump for a full list of screenings.
I don’t know why I would expect anything short of spectacular from something bearing the name of Maynard James Keenan, but how interesting could a wine documentary be? The trailer for Blood Into Wine, the previously announced, mysterious documentary about the Tool frontman’s Caduceus Cellars venture is available below.
Among the things we didn’t know: It’s seemingly a half-real, half-almost-mockumentary, as several high-profile alternative comedians appear in the trailer, including Tim Heidecker, Eric Wareheim, Bob Odenkirk and Patton Oswalt. The first part of the trailer makes it look like the film has a lot of Keenan acting and fielding staged, terrible questions from celebrity interviewers like Milla Jovovich as a gag.
We have no idea what’s going on, and we’re really worked up over something we kind of forgot about. So, business as usual for Maynard.
The Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards tasting room opened its doors on July 4, and will continue to serve 365 days a year from 11 AM to 6 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11 AM to 8 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.
Keenan told the Pulse of Radio, “Another in an endless series of complex puzzle pieces has fallen into place. We are many years away from our goal, but the opening of this tasting room is a very, very important step towards achieving those goals. Thank you all for your steadfast support.”
Has anyone actually tried this stuff, anyway? If you have, send us a review at tips [at] metal insider [dot] net. I heard a few bottles of pinot grigio can actually make the Puscifer album listenable. Hi-oh!
At some point, I’m going to have to stop covering Maynard James Keenan’s wine-related media blitz, but this is the first time I’ve seen it in video form. Here he is in full effect, giving a tasting lesson with the way-too-excited-for-wine WineLibrary.tv host Gary Vaynerchuk.
Seeing Maynard in this arena just made me realize he looks just like that annoying Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern (pictured). Seriously, dude, you’re not a food critic – being willing to eat any disgusting thing someone puts in front of you does not make you sophisticated.
First he was in your stores, signing your autographs, now he’s on your TV! Maynard James Keenan of Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer has releaed the trailer for Blood Into Wine, a documentary that follows Maynard and his vineyard partner Eric Glomski and the creation of their line of Caduceus wines. For someone who’s notoriously media-shy when it comes to his bands, Maynard sure is out there pimping his vineyard. A score for the film, comprised of original music from Keenan, will follow the documentary’s release.
UPDATE: Our buddy Chuck, the metal host at Austin’s 101X radio, just dropped this fantastic tidbit from the Austin Whole Foods signing. Apparently Maynard was only signing things from behind a curtain, presumably to deter photos. What a weirdo! Amazing.
Desperate to see your favorite band, Tool, live and in person but can’t afford the tickets? Or perhaps you’d just prefer to listen to some light jazz and munch on organic rice chips while just looking at someone in Tool. Well you’re in luck! Maynard James Keenan is taking his grape-stomping show on the road, signing bottles from his Caduceus line of wines. While you’re hanging out with metal royalty, do me a favor and pick up some peach mango salsa and blue corn chips, thanks.
Seriously though, check out the Caduceus site. It has to by far be the most awesome/creepy liquor-related site ever. It gave me flashbacks of sitting in front of a computer in my mom’s basement playing The Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time… last week. Hit the jump for Maynard’s wine tour dates.

Touring, Why CAN'T We Not Be Sober?
