While Dave Grohl is working on his own documentary, his bandmate Taylor Hawkins is making his own entrance into cinema. The Foo Fighters drummer has just signed on to play Iggy Pop in a new film about the CBGB club and its founder Hilly Kristal. Also appearing in the film, simply titled CBGB, will be Alan Rickman as Kristal, Rupert Grint (of Harry Potter fame) as The Dead Boys’  Cheetah Chrome,  Malin Akerman as Blondie’s Debbie Harry and many others.

It’s unclear as to how substantial the role of Pop will be. However, it’s also likely that Hawkins will be on the screen very little, especially since this marks his first real acting role. Then again, he has showed off his comedic chops in numerous Foo Fighters videos. Either way, it is pretty interesting that a film about the famed NYC punk club is in the works right around the same time as its resurrection in the form of a festival. Production on the film, which is also being co-produced by is Lisa Kristal Burgman (Hilly’s daughter), is expected to begin on June 25 in Savannah, Georgia, before heading to New York.
