Metal’s favorite flamenco acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela has just landed themselves a pretty big gig. The duo will team up with composer Hans Zimmer (who has worked on Inception and Dark Knight previously) to score the soundtrack for Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment of the Johny Depp/pirate franchise. Mitchell Leib, President of Music and Soundtracks at Disney, said the following about the announcement:

“We’d always felt it a creative necessity that the Pirates of the Caribbean 4 score have an original sound all its own and to distinguish itself from the first three films. With the inspiring addition of Rodrigo y Gabriela’s unique artistry under the direction of maestro Hans ‘Long John’ Zimmer, this iconic score franchise take its next step forward with an imaginative, fresh and individual new sound.”

This isn’t the first time a rock (or metal related/inspired) group has composed a big Hollywood blockbuster. And while sometimes it doesn’t necessarily equal great results, this choice of scoring sounds fantastic. Seriously, imagine Captain Jack Sparrow in the midst of a sword fight, or running away from a sword fight, to something sounding similar to their “Orion” cover! This will be awesome, and definitely gives us another reason to see the film…in addition to Penelope Cruz… Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides comes out on May 20, but the soundtrack will be available on May 17.
