Metal By Numbers 7/11: Djamn Periphery Djid Good This Week!

Posted by on July 11, 2012

Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

Anyone that thinks the djent movement was just a fad is probably eating their palm-muted words right now. Periphery’s sophomore album has a debut that many more established bands would kill for. For a band that basically was born of the internet and stoked and nurtured by blogs, to see this many people, likely of the internet generation, actually pay for the album is impressive.
Notable Debuts

Periphery, Periphery II: This Time It’s Personal (Sumerian) #43, 11,900 sold
This week’s highest metal debut is nothing short of amazing for this still-young band. Their tour on the Summer Slaughter will help keep them top of mind as well.

The Word Alive, Life Cycles (Fearless) #49, 9,900 sold
This metalcore’s band sophomore album has a much nicer debut than their first one, which debuted at #97. They’ll be out on the All Stars tour starting at the end of the month.

Nile, At the Gate of Sethu (Nuclear Blast) #113, 3,800 sold
Lots of Egyptians out there this week.

Abandon All Ships, Infamous (Rise) #122, 3,500 sold
We saw these guys last week at the “Scream It Like You Mean It” tour, and it reminded us a lot of the brilliant Howard Stern autotune pizza crank call.

Delain, We Are the Others (Sensory)  1,000 sold
This is a great first week for the Dutch symphonic metal band.

Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody, Ascennding to Infinity (Nuclear Blast)  675 sold
The former Rhapsody of Fire guitarist’s first album since splitting with the band is off to a relatively solid start for power metal in the states.

Kataklysm, Iron Will: 20 Years Determined CD/DVD (Nuclear Blast) 450 sold
Not a band first week considering that this is a 2CD/2DVD package. Check out the video for “At the Edge of the World” here.

Bonded by Blood, The Aftermath (Earache) 400 sold
This isn’t that great of a start for the thrash metal revivalists’ second album. In fact, I think Exodus’ Bonded by Blood might have sold more this week.

Deathspell Omega, Drought (Season of Mist) 300 sold
The French black metal band has an ok first week.

Notable Sales

Various Artists, Rock of Ages Soundtrack (Water Tower Music/Warner Bros.) #20, 23,200 sold
This album’s sold over 150,000 copies, which is pretty solid considering the movie has already fallen far out of the top ten.

Rush, Clockwork Angels (Roadrunner) #47, 10,700 sold
Have you seen the band’s documentary, Beyond the Lighted Stage? You totally should, but see the Anvil and Lemmy ones first.

Tenacious D, Rize of the Fenix (Columbia) #85, 5,000sold
I was all set to make a “fall of the fenix” joke, but the album’s actually up 21% this week. It’ll probably cross the 100,000 mark in two weeks.

Shinedown, Amaryllis (Atlantic) #90, 4,800 sold
This is about what the album sold last week. Selling 4,000 copies a week is pretty solid as far as I’m concerned.

Memphis May Fire, Challenger (Rise) #112, 3,800 sold
21,000 sold in two weeks? Wow, Challenger is blowing up! #toosoon.

Slash, Apocalyptic Love (Dik Hayd) #116, 3,700 sold
This has sold just under 75,000 in five weeks. That’s not bad, but it’s not as popular as his first album was, either.

Sleeping With Sirens, if you were a movie, this would be your soundtrack (Rise) #119, 3,550 sold
Well, that’s certainly a pretty dumb name for an album (actually, an EP in this band’s case).

Five Finger Death Punch, American Capitalist (Prospect Park) #121, 3,600 sold
These Tresspass headliners have sold about 420,000 copies in 39 weeks.

Gojira, L’enfant Sauvage (Roadrunner) #149, 2,950 sold
While the album has a pretty sizable 73% drop, it still has a decent second week. And if for some reason, you haven’t gotten it yet, you can still pick it up for only $4.99 at Amazon.

Falling In Reverse, The Drug In Me Is You (Epitaph) #158, 2,700 sold
Looks like the band is benefitting from being on the Warped Tour, as their year-old album rebounded last week.

Volbeat, Beyond Hell/Above Heaven (Universal) #162, 2,700 sold
Up to about 125,000 so far, with no end in sight.

Halestorm, The Strange Case Of… (Atlantic) #166, 2,600 sold
Lzzy Hale and co. hve sld abt 80,000 copies so far.

Whitechapel, Whitechapel (Metal Blade), #193, 2,200 sold
Staying on the top 200 for a third week, they’ve sold about 15,000 copies.

Marilyn Manson, Born Villain (Cooking Vinyl/ Downtown/Hell, Etc.) 2,000 sold
This album’s selling about 2,000/week, which is at least solid, but a far cry from the Manson of a decade ago.

Miss May I, At Heart (Rise) 1,900 sold
No, you may not.

Vampires Everywhere, Hellbound and Heartless (Century Media) 900 sold
I was going to listen to this album until I saw it’s cover and was overtaken by rage.

Dying Fetus, Reign Supreme (Relapse) 775 sold
They’ve sold a little over 5,000 in three weeks. Not too bad.

Kreator, Phantom Antichrist (Nuclear Blast) 725 sold
Kreator sold slightly more than they did last week. Their comeback is in full effect.

Otherwise, True Love Never Dies (Century Media) 675 sold
Yeah, I’m out of things to say about this band. They have sold about 12,000 so far.

Upon A Burning Body, Red. White. Green. (Sumerian) 390 sold
Up a solid 17%, this is likely a direct effect of their stint on the Mayhem Fest, since this is the first full week of sales since the tour started.

Skip the Foreplay, Nightlife (Epitaph) 350 sold
This techno/screamo, LMFAO-covering band sounds like a much heavier Brokencyde. If that sounds like faint praise, it sure is.

Melvins Lite, Freak Puke (Ipecac), 340 sold
One less member, all the taste and flavor of regular Melvins!

For All Those Sleeping, Outspoken (Fearless)  850 sold
The Minnesota band has a good first week for their sophomore album. And they did it without covering Taylor Swift this time.
