Metal Insider’s Top 5: Bands Who Released Three Great Albums In A Row

Posted by on May 6, 2013

Metal Insider’s Top 5 is a column where we count down the top five of…well basically anything.

It’s a safe bet that a majority of metal heads spent the past weekend blasting Slayer nonstop in honor of the late Jeff Hanneman. Pulling out our old Slayer records reminded us of something: that Slayer are among the few bands who released three stellar albums in a row. In this instance, we’re speaking of 1986’s Reign In Blood, 1988’s South Of Heaven, and 1990’s Seasons In The Abyss. That got us to thinking about other bands who accomplished a similar goal. And that’s how we came to this week’s list. Click on the page numbers below to see our top 5 bands who released three classic albums in a row (minus Slayer, even though they are certainly top 5 worthy).

    Manson’s 3 albums are awesome too :
    -Antichrist Superstar (1996)
    -Mechanical Animals (1998)
-Holly Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) (2000)

    But nice list though

  • Lagoons

    this is no trash contest!

  • LazyBones

Sepultura – Beneath The Remains, Arise and Chaos AD.

  • Ralph Justin Sane Murrmann

I’m a big Avenged Sevenfold fan but Nightmare was a masterpiece of shit and so is Hail To The King! And please don’t tell me that Evanescence is metal! Maybe you can call it “pop-rock” or something like that!

  • Nick Crescenzo

sweet baby jesus! this has to be a joke. It’s a top 5. maybe AS makes top 30. Evenescence isn’t metal man. if a baby can learn the licks, there is no way it can make the genre.

Really three great albums from Metallica, but my favorite Metallica album is……and justice for all. I like the raw, cold and heavy sound of it.

  • Eric Furman

…implying that “Iron Maiden” and “Killers” weren’t great albums…

  • marco

Evanescence is not exactly metal, but some of their songs have elements of metal, they are considered a gothic rock band and they are for the most part but as amy lee said it herself dark rock!

  • jtn

    no megadeth…fuckkk..

  • David Marshall

Wow I can’t believe you were able to type this with all the laughter that must have been happening. Worst band in the world today.

  • David Marshall

As much I like Megadeth they haven’t made 3 in a row a couple times hit doubles for sure Countdown to Extinction & Youthanasia for sure and then United Abominations & Endgame could be considered but Rust In Piece was crap and highly overrated. then Th1rt3en doesn’t quite hit the same lofty heights.

  • Jorge

[email protected]’em all being better than Justice…

  • Dude

maiden had 15 great albums in a row, if you ask me

  • Urungus

Maybe ‘Killers’, ‘Number’ and ‘Piece Of Mind’?

  • Omerta

How bout Lamb of God; New American Gospel, As the Palaces Burn, and Ashes of the Wake

  • tHe iNesCapaBle

Allow me to compose a well crafted and logical defense of Peace Sells –>SoFarSoGoodSoWhat –> Rust In Peace.

    Nevermind. You are INSANE!

  • tHe iNesCapaBle

  • David Marshall

So because you can’t devise a scheme to make your point I’m insane…hmm ok

  • Ryan Colville

Cmon man how is undertow ,aenima, lateralus not on this list?

  • tHe iNesCapaBle

My immediate reaction was to try and argue the merits of RIP; build an argument that Holy Wars, Take No Prisoners and Poison Was the Cure was some of the best metal Megadeth EVER devised . As I considered augmenting my argument further I reread your statement “…Youthanasia for sure” and realized that only a crazy person would attempt to argue with an insane person.

In the immortal words of Mr. Mustaine: “If I know I’m going crazy, than I must not be insane”.

    Anyway; nice chatting. Keep rocking.

  • tHe iNesCapaBle

Do you take what I take? Endurance is the word.

  • FunkyMagurk

Rollins Band- Hard Volume, End of Silence and Weight; High On Fire- any 3 albums

  • adaminoregon

What about Zep? Are they not metal enough? What about System of a down? D.R.I.? I’m sure we could all go on for a while with this list.
