Headbanger’s Brawl is a weekly column where Metal Insider’s Bram and Zach take a moment to debate and analyze two opposing sides of a topical issue occurring in the world of metal and/or the music industry.
In this week’s Headbangers’ Brawl, Bram and Zach have one last chat as they prepare for a day of looting and carnage that’ll follow tomorrow’s Judgment Day.
Bram: Well Zach, we’ve had a good run. It’s been great working with you, but I know that at least one of us won’t be here tomorrow. You see, the chosen ones are going to disappear from the earth on judgement day. While I know I haven’t necessarily been on the up and up, you’ve been living a virtuous life, so you’re probably going to heaven or wherever while I suffer through the end of the world. Hell, maybe we’ll both make it, but there’s apparently five months of torture as the dead rise from their graves, fires, floods, pestilence, plague, all that good stuff. With that in mind, what metal do you think we should have as our soundtrack to the endtimes?
I think I’ll start with a fairly obvious one. I’m going to go with Haunt What’s Left by This or the Apocalypse. I mean, if given a choice, I’d probably go with this over the apocalypse, but might as well be listening to one of last year’s most underrated albums. How about you?
Zach: I wouldn’t be too sure about me going to heaven. Even if I have lived a virtuous life, I have a bad feeling the whole “I’m a Jew” thing is going to go against me tomorrow. Oy vey, eh?
Anyways, I think if I’m going to go out, I’m going to go out in style in either two ways:
1. The straight forward way by listening to anything by Slayer. Their box set Soundtrack To The Apocalypse pretty much says it all.
2. The tongue and cheek way by listening to Europe’s “The Final Countdown” because if I’m indeed going to hell by not listening to a bunch of wackos, I might as well act wacko myself and march on down to the abyss in my 80′s hair metal gear while this uber cheesy anthem is blasted.
But if we indeed are going to burn in the apocalypse, chances are we’re going to be punished with awful music. With that in mind, Bram, what are you praying WON’T be playing during the end of the world?
I’d say “Friday” by Rebecca Black….need I say more?
Bram: Well, I’d go with “It’s the End of the World As We Know It” by R.E.M. I’ve never really liked that song, and I’m sure it’s being overplayed right now. You can throw in anything by the Barenaked Ladies, most dubstep, and anything by Animal Collective. I’d rather suffer through an apocalypse, thanks.
So what music will you be playing during the apocalypse tomorrow? Let us know in the comment section below. See you all in the afterlife!
