Last week, a story was posted about how Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses is apparently the greatest vocalist of all time according to a travel website. While we were relieved to have that whole debate settled by a reliable source, the claim might have been a bit premature. VVN Music decided to dig deeper into the list with a different set of criteria. The original list was made up of Rolling Stone‘s 100 Greatest Singers of all time, the top male and female artists at the Billboard Music Awards 2014, and vocal range stats managed by The Range Place. Naturally, many singers were not found on the list because of the specific criteria, so VVN Music looked into vocalists not included on the above lists with a greater range. Lo’ and behold, the new singer to top the list is Mike Patton of Faith No More.

Of all the singers on the list, Mike Patton is the only one with a range of six octaves. We’ve listed the “new” top five vocalists below and you can check out full list on VVN Music:

1. 6 octaves, 1/2 note – Mike Patton (Eb1 to E7)
2. 5 octaves, 5-1/2 notes – Corey Taylor (Eb1 to C7)
3. 5 octaves, 4-1/2 notes – Diamanda Galás (F2 to C#8)
4. 5 octaves, 3 notes – David Lee Roth  (E1 to A6)
5. 5 octaves, 2-1/2 notes – Axl Rose (F1 to Bb6)
