Metal By Numbers 4/21: Week Of The Black Rainbow

Posted by on April 21, 2010

By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

This week saw a good amount of metal debuts. Three of them in fact came from Metal Blade Records. However, it was everyone’s favorite “not quite metal” band that had the highest debut this week. Coheed and Cambria’s fifth album Year Of The Black Rainbow debuted at #5 on the top 200 Billboard charts. I know a majority of metal fans are split on their opinions about Coheed and Cambria. They might not define metal, but I personally think they are pretty cool and have some awesome songs. They definitely are a bit lighter than most bands, but their Iron Maiden influence is undeniable. Either way, they still had the best rock debut of the week. Because FMQB has ended their metal radio chart, we do not have metal radio standings this week.

Notable Debuts:

Coheed and Cambria, Year Of The Black Rainbow (Colombia) #5 51,000 sold
The New Jersey band behind the mammoth “Welcome Home” has a hell of an impressive debut. If you enjoy their prog-rock influenced style, then you’ll enjoy the spacey video to their first single “The Broken”.

Bleeding Through, Bleeding Through (Rise) #133 3,600 sold
Their self-titled debut is the first to be released by their new label home Rise Records.

War Of Ages, Eternal (Facedown)# 158 3,000 sold
The Hardcore Christian band’s fourth album sells enough to land on the top 200.

Ov Hell, Underworld Regime (Prosthetic) 700 sold
The Norwegian black metal super group have a decent debut.

The Ocean, Heliocentric (Metal Blade) 630 sold
Not a bad first week for the experimental German metal band.

Bison B.C., Dark Ages (Metal Blade) 540 sold
You can see the thrash blues band on tour with High On Fire this month.

Woe Of Tyrants, Threnody (Metal Blade) 520 sold
This band has been pretty busy for the past month supporting Overkill on their past Spring tour.

Jon Olivia’s Pain, Festival (AFM-Locomotive) 420 sold
The former Savatage singer’s latest solo release sells modestly.

Notable Sales:
Slash, Slash (EMI) #16 21,000 sold
64% decrease, but still in the top 20 during its second week.

Alice In Chains, Black Gives Way To Blue (Virgin) #97 4,700 sold
A bit of an increase this week. Since the band is continuing to tour behind this album, expect to see it hang around a little longer.

Them Crooked Vultures, Them Crooked Vultures (DGC/Interscope) #119 3,900 sold
16% increase as the album continues to sell.

Five Finger Death Punch, War Is The Answer (Prospect Park) #125 3,700 sold
Last week, they were tied with Them Crooked Vultures in sales and chart ranking. This week, they stand by themselves.

Motley Crue, Greatest Hits (Motley Records) #144 3,400 sold
Yep, the greatest hit package is still selling. Roughly around the same amount as last week in fact.

Insane Clown Posse, Bang! Pow! Boom! (Psychopathic) #147 3,200 sold
A 57% drop from last week, but we’re still unsure as to what triggered this album’s return to the charts. We’ll let you know what we think when we’re done watching SNL’s newest ICP parody.

Slipknot, All Hope is Gone (Roadrunner) #169 2,800 sold
Slight dip in sales, but still pretty good for an album that’s been out since last Summer.

Rob Zombie, Hellbilly Deluxe 2 (Loud and Proud/Roadrunner) #176 2,700 sold
Still hanging in there. I’m sure his co-headlining slot at this year’s Mayhem Fest will help out though.

Veil Of Maya, ID (Sumerian) 1,800 sold
61% decrease from last week, but still a solid second week for the album.

We Came As Romans, To Plant A Seed (Equal Vision) 690 sold
Still selling around the same amount.

Carnifex, Hell Chose Me (Victory) 690 sold
A little more than last week.

Overkill, Ironbound (E1) 620 sold
They witnessed an 18%, but the thrash Gods are still standing.

Armored Saint, La Raza (Metal Blade Records) 480 sold
This album is still kicking a lot longer than many were expecting.

Volbeat, Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood (Megaforce) 400 sold
Basically the same amount they sold last week.
