Metal By Numbers 9/4: Avenged Sevenfold Top The Charts Once Again

Posted by on September 4, 2013

Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

You gotta hand it to Avenged Sevenfold: the band has done pretty well with staying on top of things despite the death of The Rev and having a league of haters throughout the years. Now the band has once again topped the Billboard charts with a number 1 album, a feat previously achieved by the band’s previous album Nightmare back in 2010. Sure, Hail To The King has had its share of…comparisons to other famous metal albums (like a certain one with a black album cover released in 1991), but that’s likely a reason why it’s so successful in the first place. Plus, it’s not the first time a metal band has seemingly “borrowed” from those who came before. Anyway, we’ve also got debuts from DevilDriver and a certain band that involves goblins.

Notable Debuts:

Avenged Sevenfold, Hail To The King (Warner Bros.) #1, 159,375 sold

The band has the top debut this week with its second number 1 album and their first with new drummer Arin Ilejay.

DevilDriver, Winter Kills (Napalm) #32, 11,500 sold

The sixth studio album from DevilDriver is the first with bassist Chris Towning. It’s also their highest-charting album ever.

Nekrogoblikon, Power EP (Goblin) 570 sold

Did you ever wish metal music could use more goblins? You’re in luck with Nekrogoblikon’s new EP.

Notable Sales:

Five Finger Death Punch, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell Vol. 1 (Prospect Park) #18, 22,450 sold

Well, there certainly aren’t many other bands who have had Rob Halford, Max Cavalera, Maria Brink, and Jamey Jasta on the same album.

Kid Rock, Rebel Soul (Atlantic) #64, 6,550 sold

Just under 550,000 sold in total.

Skillet, Rise (Atlantic), #77, 5,450 sold

At week 10, this is close to hitting the 150,000 mark.

Black Sabbath, 13 (Universal) #92, 4,600 sold

Most fans would probably agree that “Methademic” ought to have been on the actual album.

Asking Alexandria, From Death To Destiny (Sumerian) #99, 4,050 sold

Over 60,000 sold in total thus far.

Born Of Osiris, Tomorrow We Die Alive (Sumerian) #111, 3,675 sold

A second week 72% drop for this one.

Volbeat, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies (Universal/Republic) #118, 3,575 sold

This gets another boost of 39%. Work that tour magic, guys.

Blessthefall, Hollow Bodies (Fearless) #121, 3,500 sold

A drop of 84% rings kind of hollow.

Alice In Chains, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here  (Virgin) #136, 2,850 sold

Looks like Uproar is giving this album some boosts.

Halestorm, The Strange Case Of… (Atlantic) #139, 2,800 sold

This is at a lower position than last week, but it actually sold more this week.

Shinedown, Amaryllis (Atlantic) #147, 2,700 sold

This sold almost the exact same amount as it did last week.

30 Seconds To Mars, Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams (Virgin) #153, 2,500 sold

This pops back on the charts with just under 100,000 sold.

Bring Me The Horizon, Sempiternal (Epitaph) #157, 2,475 sold

Bring me over 100,000 sold in total.

Sleeping With Sirens, Feel (Rise) #180, 1,975 sold

A drop of 13% in week 13.

Various Artists, Rock of Ages Soundtrack (Water Tower Music/Warner Bros.) #182, 1,975 sold

Every rose has its thorn. In the case of the charts, this album is a particularly large thorn.

Fleshgod Apocalypse, Labyrinth (Nuclear Blast) 1,575 sold

These guys are just wrapping up a US tour with Wintersun and Arsis.

Watain, The Wild Hunt (Century Media) 830 sold

Dying to see Watain? They’ll be in the US by October.

Woe, Is Me, American Dream EP (Rise) 680 sold

The title track features Danny Leal from Upon A Burning Body.

Deafheaven, Sunbather (Deathwish) 400 sold

Apparently, the album cover was inspired by Pulp’s We Love Life.

Revocation, Revocation (Relapse) 380 sold

The band will soon be touring Europe with The Black Dahlia Murder and Aborted.

Sworn In, The Death Card (Razor & Tie) 380 sold

A second week drop of 84%.

Otherwise, True Love Never Dies (Century Media) 330 sold

A 15% boost this week.

James LaBrie, Impermanent Resonance (Inside Out) 320 sold

For the record, that’s not LaBrie doing the screaming vocals. It’s the drummer Peter Wildoer who actually auditioned for Dream Theater back in 2011.

Texas Hippie Coalition, Peacemaker (Carved) 290 sold

The band has more US dates coming, which may keep this afloat.

Crown The Empire, The Fallout (Rise) 290 sold

This is having a slight falling out with the charts with a drop of 32%.

O’Brother, Disillusion (Triple Crown) 290 sold

O’sales, where art thou?

Butcher Babies, Goliath (Century Media) 270 sold

These babies have popped back on the charts.

Danko Jones, Rock and Roll is Black and Blue (Bad Taste) 270 sold

This album came out almost a year ago, but its got some sales thanks to Uproar.
