When Mike Portnoy left Dream Theater, it probably wasn’t his intention to be a journeyman drummer, but he’s been tapped to sit behind the throne for another big band – this time Stone Sour. With Roy Mayorga taking some time off for the birth of his first daughter, the Adrenaline Mob drummer will be filling in on September 24th at the Rock In Rio festival for a one-off performance.

“It’s my honor and pleasure to be able to help out my good friends in Stone Sour and my brother Roy in their time of need,” Portnoy said in a statement.  “It’s also an unexpected treat for me to get another visit with some of the greatest fans in the world down in Brazil.”

Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor commented that having Mike fill in will be “great.” Portnoy likely became friendly with Stone Sour at least year’s Rockstar Uproar Tour, when Stone Sour toured with Avenged Sevenfold, who Portnoy played with.
