As if this year wasn’t already jam packed with highly anticipated releases, the Melvins have announced details regarding a new album. Titled Freak Puke, the record will be released on June 5 via Ipecac Records. However, Freak Puke is slightly different from the sludge rock band’s previous 20 albums.

This album will actually be released under the moniker Melvins Lite, with frontman King Buzzo and drummer Dale Crover being joined by bassist Trevor Dunn (Tomahawk/ ex-Mr. Bungle). This version of the band performed a handful of shows last year and supposedly focused on the band’s “lighter” material. The three are also apparently planning to tour in support of the album this Summer.

Not much else has been revealed about the Melvins Lite version of the band. However, the idea of the Melvins and Trevor Dunn (who has toured the band previously and worked with Buzzo in Fantomas) working on material together has us excited. You can check out the cover artwork for Freak Puke above, while fan filmed footage of Melvins Lite performing “Pitfalls In Serving Warrants” in Costa Mesa, CA on July 12, 2011 can be seen after the jump.
