Chino Moreno Still Uncertain About Deftones Album ‘Eros’ Release

Posted by on June 25, 2013

Last month, Deftones frontman Chino Moreno was asked about the release of shelved Deftones album Eros, and commented that it’s release might be imminent. This news came in wake of the recent death of bassist Chi Cheng, who fell into a coma after a car accident in 2008. The accident led the band to shelve the album, and they continued writing other albums without Cheng. Yet Eros still remains unheard. However, despite his comment last month about the possible release of Eros, in an interview with MTVhive posted today, he said the following:

I get asked about that record a lot. For a while, I was giving the same answer, “No, no, no, no, no, no, no.” After Chi’s passing, I went back and listened to some of the record and it was a pretty intense experience to say the least. I think it should be released, but we don’t have any definite plans. There’s some work to do on it. Deftones have been moving forward in a strong, positive motion, so for us to stop and reflect on something five years ago, I don’t know if we’re ready for that. I’m not sure that’s where we want to put our energy. It is a special thing for us: it’s the last thing Chi played on. It will see the light of day. I just don’t know when.

Given that the album was not yet completed when it was shelved (only about six songs were recorded), releasing it would mean that the band would have to do more work on the album that was Chi Cheng’s last work. Understandably, this is something that will be difficult for the band, , so while Moreno feels that the album should be released at some point, it could be years before fans get to hear this missing piece of Deftones material.
