It’s been over 12 years since System of a Down released their double album, Mezmerize/Hypnotize. Since then, the band have toured sporadically and been involved with multiple other projects, and while the flames were fanned when the band said that they had new music they were working on back in 2016, nothing’s come of it yet. Asked about it by KROQ, drummer John Dolmayan essentially said “nope.”

“It’s a complex question. You know I’m ready to go any time and certain members of my band haven’t been able to make it work for themselves. And it’s one of those things where if you can’t get everybody to… If you can’t get everybody to come together and do it, it just doesn’t happen.”

adding:

“I don’t know if it’s ever gonna happen at this point. I don’t like saying that but you got to live in the realm of reality and anything we do outside of System is never gonna anywhere be close to System. System is the best thing that anybody in System will ever do. But we still do the other things.”

It’s seemed like the sole holdout was singer Serj Tankian in the past, but Dolmayan is being very diplomatic by not saying throwing any of his fellow bandmates under the bus. In the meantime, Daron Malakian has a new Scars on Broadway album coming soon, and System will be playing a few shows on the West Coast later this year.
