Avenged Sevenfold take on ’60s classic “Runaway”

You’ve got to hand it to Avenged Sevenfold for continuing to do different stuff. The surprise release of The Stage might not have sold as many albums as they’d liked, but it can’t be denied that it was an innovative idea. And since the October release of the album, the band have continued to put out singles that aren’t on in. A few months ago, they covered the Spanish track “Malaguena Salerosa,” and they’ve just released a cover of Del Shannon’s classic “Runaway.”

This cover is notable for several reasons. First of all, guitarist Zacky Vengeance sings as opposed to M.Shadows, and it also features The Vandals’ Warren Fitzgerald helping out on guitar. It comes accompanied by a video, and it seems pretty apparentl that the band are enjoying themselves. It’s hard to remember the last time a band have released so many non-album singles so shortly after an album’s  been released, but it’s pretty forward-thinking. Playlists have exploded in popularity, and if the  band can continue to release music that gets on them, they’ll rack up spins (and money) without having to worry about having an album to worry about. Meanwhile, rock radio is still spinning them regularly enough that they’re getting exposure from them as well. And touring with Metallica is keeping them in the spotlight as well.
