What makes Jacob Bannon tick? That’s pretty much what you’ll find out upon watching Rungs in a Ladder: Jacob Bannon of Converge, a new short documentary that debuted on Vice’s music site, Noisey. It’s a sparse film that plays more like a monologue than a profile, featuring Bannon talking about what guides his life while the camera follows him on a typical day as he makes coffee, does muay thai, and creates art and music. Bannon dwells on an injury he suffered as a teenager after jumping off a bridge (!) saying it shaped a lot of his psyche. And as he talks about always wanting to move forward and create, the nicely understated film, directed by Ian McFarland, shows him doing just that.
