Our Favorite Pantera Songs In Honor of Dimebag Darrell

Posted by on December 8, 2010

It’s hard to believe that it’s been six years since Dime was assassinated. When deranged fan Nathan Gale opened fire at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus Ohio during a Damageplan show, killing “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott and three others, he took away one of the best guitarists in metal at the top of his game. Through Pantera, and into Damageplan and Rebel Meets Rebel, Dime mixed shredding with feeling, creating a unique style all his own. While December 8th has been a day of remembrance for music fans since 1980 when John Lennon was gunned down, it’s taken on another meaning since 2004, with any metalhead vividly remembering where they were when they heard about the massacre. With today hanging heavy in our hearts, Metal Insider would like to pay tribute to Dime by listing our favorite Pantera songs.

“Mouth For War”– “Walk” may be the Pantera song that everyone knows by heart. But it’s Vulgar Display Of Power that shows Pantera at their best.

“Primal Concrete Sledge”– This particular song saw Pantera move far away from their early glam metal roots into the aggressive thrash direction that we know and love them for.

“Fucking Hostile”– This song is fast, violent, and features cursing. All the perfect ingredients for a Pantera song.

“I’m Broken”– Anyone who had fear that Far Beyond Driven couldn’t live up to its predecessor were proven  idiots for even having an ounce of doubt once this song was unleased.

“This Love”– This dark, aggressive song about a past love is a prime example of how gifted Dimebag was at creating melodic and gut wrenching solos.

“Goddamn Electric”– Off of their last studio album, Reinventing The Steel, this song was proof that Pantera was still heavy as hell during a time when rap metal reigned supreme.
