Phish Cover Black Sabbath At New Year’s Eve Show

First off, let it be said that Metal Insider aren’t really fans of Phish. Nothing to take away from them musically, but the whole neo-Dead thing does nothing for us, and the less said about their fans, the better. So on New Year’s Eve, between Phish playing at Madison Square Garden and the whole ball-dropping-thing a few blocks north, we stayed as far away from midtown Manhattan as possible.

That being said, Phish performed a solid cover of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” at their show on December 31.  While other bands might have mocked the song or turned it into a travesty, there’s genuine enthusiasm shown by the band. It’s not like Phish are the first jam band to cover Black Sabbath, but we’re impressed with how this turned out. Check out the version after the jump.

The band’s “enthusiasm” aside, this version had no balls whatsoever. The crowd should kill themselves for jumping around like happy idiots during a Sabbath song…one of the only they probably actually recognize.

The two biggest musical influences for me is Sabbath and the Grateful Dead. So fuck off!
