Like most fans, we were surprised when we saw a picture of Mastodon with Barney the friendly dinosaur and friends last week. And apparently, Mastodon was just as surprised to bump into the kids TV dinosaur.

In an interview with Music Radar, guitarist/co-vocalist Brent Hinds and guitarist Bill Kelliher revealed that they didn’t realize until arriving in Indianapolis on November 17 that they were playing the same venue as Barney’s Birthday Bash (Barney was downstairs and Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang were upstairs). The two admitted that seeing the marquee (which The Dillinger Escape Plan snapped a picture of and posted on Twitter) was “right out of Spinal Tap.” However, Hinds and Kelliher also revealed that people from the Barney’s Birthday Bash show actually joined Mastodon onstage for “Creature Lives.”

Before you freak out and scream “Barney was onstage with Mastodon?!,” video that The PRP found of the said performance doesn’t show any purple dinosaur onstage. Thus, if the cast of Barney’s Birthday Bash did hop onstage during “Creature Lives,” they were out of costume. You can still watch video of Mastodon performing “Creature Lives” in Indianapolis with some special guest above. We think the group singing next to Hinds is from Barney’s Birthday Bash, while members of Red Fang can be seen next to Kelliher.
