Remember that band Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty? No? Hmm. You might recognize their singer as Maynard James Keenan, frontman of Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. And you might recognize this song, “Burn About Out” as sounding a hell of a lot like “Sober.” This grainy footage from Grand Rapids public access TV was filmed in April of 1987, which would have been when Keenan was attending the Kendall College of Art and Design there. This took place a few years after Trent Reznor covered Billy Idol in the Midwest, but it looks just as grainy, and both frontmen would probably rather pretend these performances never happened. “Burn About Out” is a lot faster than “Sober,” and lacks the dynamics (and chorus) that the more familiar song would have six years later. Thanks to tipster John Ward for pointing this out to us.
