Trent Reznor Finally Kicks That Pesky Twitter Addiction
Posted by Dan Rodriguez on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 10:30 am
We chastised Trent Reznor earlier this month for still using his Twitter account despite proclamations of taking his social networking ball and going home because of all the Web 2.0 meanies.
Well, Trent finally manned up and @trent_reznor is no more. I guess he just needed a few weeks to get around to it. You know, ween himself off. I shed a tear, because we never got our @MetalInsider #FollowFriday.

As pathetic as this may sound, this kind of saddens me. Though Reznor would occasionally use Twitter to bash musical peers (oh the Chris Cornell bashing, what memories), he also used his account to better connect with his fans. As a musician trying to find new ways of action in the struggling music industry, Reznor updated his status constantly with exclusive news regarding the band, featured exciting contests, and gave away free tickets to shows during the NIN/JA tour. Lets also not forget the moeny Reznor raised through special packages for the ill fan, Eric De La Cruz, using Twitter to promote raising money and awareness for Cruz. He was one of the first artist who didn’t just use their status to let everyone know about everyday crap no one cares about. Reznor led the to showing how Twitter could be used to promote music during a time of struggle in the music business.

He hasn’t kicked anything. He’s still on twitter under a different name, with his account locked.

I feel sad for him that in doing so many mind-blowingly fantastic things with Twitter (as Zach points out), it also opened up a direct line between him and the zillions of douchebags out there from which he might otherwise have been a step or two removed. It would have pissed me off, too.
