We didn’t really watch that much of the MTV Video Music Awards last night. First of all, The Simpsons marathon was on, and at the same time it started, the “Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie” episode was on. Secondly, maybe we’re out of touch with what the MTV generation is watching, but all you really need to know is that the award for “Best Rock Video” went to… Lorde? So Lorde is rock now. Congrats? At any rate, pop punk boy band 5 Seconds of Summer were nominated for an award and also performed on the show. We Came As Romans guitarist Joshua Moore noticed via his Instagram that the band’s Calum Hood was rocking a WCAR vest at the pre-show. Given that both 5SOS and Lorde are about the rockiest thing MTV is supporting these days (other Best Rock Video nominees were Linkin Park, Imagine Dragons, The Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys), this is somewhat of a win, especially for We Came as Romans. Moore hypothesizes that the connection was producer John Feldmann, who produced both WCAR’s most recent album Tracing Back Roots and some of 5SOS’ debut album.
