Legendary rocker Tom Petty died last night (2nd) after suffering from cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital. There were several reports that he was declared dead. However, at that time, he was clinging on for life, and after CBS reported he’d passed, they were forced to retract that statement after the LAPD said they had no confirmation that he’d died. It’s now been confirmed by his family that he died peacefully at 8:40 pm PST. He was 66.

Tony Dimitriades, Petty’s longtime manager of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers spoke on behalf of the family:

On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty.

He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived.

He died peacefully at 8:40pm PST surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.
