Making Beer Is No ‘Trouble’ For Jeff Olson

Posted by on January 24, 2014

troubleAnother year, another beer-and-metal collaboration. Jeff “Oly” Olson, the original drummer for legendary doom metal band Trouble and founding member of Retro Grave, has spent the last few years working for Portland, Maine brewery Allagash. For 2014, the brewery has announced a new stout called Red Howes, which is the creation of Allagash and Olson. This one is especially noteworthy, as Allagash is a pretty nationally known brewing company. Though he isn’t a brewer at Allagash, Olson has had his hands in the process of making this interesting beer. Named for Olson’s cranberry-grower grandfather, Red Howes is a 8.5% ABV stout brewed with 3,000 pounds of fresh New England cranberries. Black and red? Sounds like the colors of metal to me.

The best part of this is that Olson will be personally doing meet and greets for the release of the beer. The first one will take place at Allagash, Saturday January 25, but another one will happen on March 1 at one of Metal Insider’s favorite NYC bars, Idle Hands.
