Metal By Numbers 4/20: Deftones get high on the charts

Posted by on April 20, 2016

deftones gore album coverMetal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

Happy 4/20, where stoner metal fans everywhere prepare to smoke some dank kush and play Sleep on repeat. Actually, let’s be honest, they were already probably doing that. In any case, there’s plenty to celebrate today besides the existence of Dopesmoker and Domino’s Pizza. For example, Deftones continue to cultivate a wide audience with their latest album landing in the top five, just shy of the number one spot nabbed by The Lumineers (you know, the ones that go “ho-hey”). Also, at this point in the year, the charts are absolutely stuffed from bands with big debuts to the ones who lucked out on selling a couple hundred copies thanks to Bandcamp. Please enjoy the list while I contemplate the next time I can use the term “dank” on this site.

Notable Debuts:

Deftones, Gore (Reprise) #2, 68,575 sold

This is the band’s highest charting album since 2003’s self-titled effort.

Zakk Wylde, Book of Shadows II (eOne) #6, 18,150 sold

Zakk Wylde’s second solo album hits up the top ten.

Erra, Drift (Sumerian) #28, 6,400 sold

This is the band’s third release and their best debut yet.

Filter, Crazy Eyes (Wind-Up) #51, 4,600 sold

The band’s latest didn’t debut quite as well as their previous album.

Ihsahn, Arktis (Candlelight) 980 sold

Ihsahn’s latest had a better debut that 2013’s Das Seelenbrechen.

Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas, Mariner (Indie) 700 sold

The band’s collaborative effort is their best-selling effort yet in the US.

Left Behind, Seeing Hell (Unbeaten) 660 sold

This hardcore/metal crossover make their debut on the charts.

Save Us From The Archon, L’Eclisse (Tragic Hero) 580 sold

These guys are an instrumental prog/post-hardcore act currently touring with Intervals.

Notable Sales:

Disturbed, Immortalized (Reprise) #18, 8,575 sold

This has made the climb back into the top twenty.

Babymetal, Metal Resistance (RAL) #58, 4,050 sold

A 67% drop in week two doesn’t bring this down too far.

Halestorm, Into the Wild Life (Atlantic) #68,  3,550 sold

A drop of 26% after last week’s surge.

Amon Amarth, Jomsviking (Metal Blade) #80, 3,150 sold

A leak in the boat leads to a drop of 40%.

Black Stone Cherry, Kentucky (Mascot) #81, 3,125 sold

A second week 75% drop.

Asking Alexandria, The Black (Sumerian) #93, 2,850 sold

A 41% drop that no one asked for.

Five Finger Death Punch, Got Your Six (Prospect Park) #97, 2,775 sold

A 10% drop. Let’s take a moment to think about how this will probably still be on here when their next album comes out.

Shinedown, Threat To Survival (Atlantic) #100, 2,600 sold

At week 30, this is sitting on over 200,000 sold.

In This Moment, Black Widow (Atlantic) #113, 2,400 sold

This takes a 29% drop after making its way back up the charts.

Megadeth, Dystopia (Tradecraft/UMe) #115, 2,375 sold

A 33% drop after re-entering the charts.

Trivium, Silence in the Snow #149, 1,825 sold

This may see more numbers when the band starts their US tour this Saturday.

Highly Suspect, Mister Asylum (300 Entertainment) #158, 1,750 sold

A suspicious 48% drop.

Anthrax, For All Kings (Megaforce) #168, 1,550 sold

A drop of 22% for all.

This clings to the top 200 after a 6% drop.

The Used, Live and Acoustic at the Palace (Hopeless) #197, 1,325 sold

A larger than average second week drop takes this down by 91%.

In Dying Arms, Original Sin (Tragic Hero) 720 sold

Rather than a drop, this nabs a huge boost in week two.

Mike & The Melvins, Three Men & a Baby (Sub Pop)  580 sold

Don’t be a baby about a 77% drop in week two.

Caspian, Dust and Disquiet (Triple Crown) 460 sold

Another boost of 20% thanks to touring with Underoath.

Abbath, Abbath (Season of Mist) 400 sold

This sold nearly the same as last week.

Red Sun Rising, Polyester Zeal (Razor & Tie) 320 sold

A tiny boost of 4%.

Devour The Day, S.O.A.R. (Razor & Tie) 300 sold

This debut last week with 1,875 sold.

Last In Line, Heavy Crown (Frontiers) 275 sold

A 8% drop doesn’t line up well.

Moonsorrow, Jumalten Aika (Century Media) 240 sold

A second week drop of 65%.

Graves at Sea, The Curse That Is (Relapse) 240 sold

A 73% drop washes over the second week.

O’Brother, Endless Light (Triple Crown) 220 sold

Not feeling so light after a 32% drop.
