On November 4, 2008, Deftones ceased to exist as we knew them. That’s when bassist Chi Cheng, who died this past weekend, suffered head trauma in a car accident (wear your seatbelts, people, seriously). With the future of the band up in the air, the band scrapped Eros, the album they’d been working on. They played a show in 2009 with Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega, then decided to record an album with him, 2010’s Diamond Eyes. It turned out to re-energize the band, who toured with Vega. Last year’s Koi No Yokan proved that Diamond Eyes was no fluke. With Cheng’s sad passing, Vega might become more than just a temp, but that’s a question that should be addressed in due time, after the band has time to mourn for their brother.
