2. Day of the Dead (1985)

This is the third film of the George Romero trilogy that really kickstarted the zombie genre into popular culture back in 1968 with the original Night of the Living Dead. What really makes this particular film stand out is the palpable lack of hope and desolation. It takes place several years after the initial outbreak in a secured underground bunker and there are very few humans left alive. It has some very brutal death scenes, and I think the most true to life film of the series. Truly chilling.
