Metallica Joined Onstage By Jason Newsted, Perform Unreleased Song During First Night Of 30th Anniversary Shows

Posted by on December 6, 2011

Metallica promised lots of surprises for fans during their intimate 30th Anniversary shows at the Filmore in San Francisco. And last night, during the first night out of four, Metallica did not disappoint. Among many of the surprise guests was none other than former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted. This marked the first time Newsted, who has been keeping busy with his stoner punk band Papa Wheelie, joined Metallica onstage since the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Ceremony in 2009.

Other special appearances from the first night included Diamond Head’s Sean Harris and Brian Tatler, Saxon’s Biff Byford, Metal Church’s John Marshall (who also use to be Metallica’s guitar tech and occasionally filled in for James Hetfield), and Apocalyptica (who performed an opening set that night). On top of that, the band also brought up a fan club member from the audience to help them perform “Wherever I May Roam.” While video from the entire show is scarce, Metallica have uploaded multiple pictures on Facebook, while more (like the one above) have been floating around the web.

But the surprises didn’t stop there. Metallica performed a song that was recorded during the Death Magnetic sessions but was never released. While video of Metallica performing the previously unreleased song called “Hate Train” hasn’t been posted online, the band actually emailed members of their official fan club a rough mix version of the recording. You can listen to the previously unreleased song “Hate Train,” as well as view the set list from Metallica’s first of four 30th Anniversary shows, after the jump. The next three shows will be December 7, December 9, and December 10, and more major surprise guests are likely in store (at least if Hetfield gets his way).
