As If The Grammys Haven’t Downplayed Metal Enough

Posted by on April 6, 2011

The National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences announced today that they were “restructuring” the categories for the Grammy Awards so as to decrease the number of recognized categories in 2012 from 109 to 78. And guess which two awards among the numerous genres and fields received a makeover? That’s right: the “Best Metal” and “Best Hard Rock” prizes. The two categories have now been combined together to form the “Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance” award.

This really should come as no surprise to the average metal fan. The Recording Academy has proven year after year that they have very little care for the genre of metal, always picking safe and older bands to win each award while ignoring younger and heavier acts. In other words, this news simply means that more actual metal and hard rock acts will get ignored in favor of nominating Nickelback (who’ve been nominated for “Best Hard Rock” twice now).

Also among the many getting cropped down are the categories “Best Rock Solo Vocal Performance,” “Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals” and “Best Rock Instrumental Performance” (in favor of the more vague “Best Rock Performance” title). Oh well, guess it just gives us another reason why we shouldn’t give a crap about The Grammys.
