We were stunned when Metallica cancelled their Australian/New Zealand tour due to James Hetfield’s return to rehab. Papa Het has a long history of struggling with addiction, and after nearly twenty years later, from his prior treatment, he entered once again. The announcement was made just a few weeks after the group’s iconic S&M2 concert and on the 33rd anniversary of Cliff Burton’s death, which made the sudden news even more shocking. Since the announcement, the band has been rather silent, sharing any updates on his overall recovery. Drummer Lars Ulrich briefly addressed this subject back in October, stating, “he’s doing what he needs to; he’s in the process of healing himself.” While an update on Hetfield’s overall health has been silent, the band seems to have a busy 2020 schedule ahead as they are booked to headline major festivals with two sets at each. We do wish a full and healthy recovery for Hetfield and a safe return back to the stage, when and if he’s ready.
