“Seasons in the Abyss” from Seasons in the Abyss

I have to admit that I didn’t really get Slayer until seeing them at Ozzfest 2004. I was blown away pretty fast at the intensity they projected from the stage, but what stood out the most was hearing them ripped into “Seasons In The Abyss.” I was amazed at how vicious yet melodic the song’s riffs and groove were, topped off with what might be Slayer’s catchiest chorus ever. From there, I dug deeper into Slayer and fell in love, but “Season In The Abyss” was the song that made me open my eyes.

“Spill the Blood” from South of Heaven

While Slayer’s best known for their speed, it’s when they slow down that they’re even more sinister. This Hanneman-written song is the best example of that. It caps an album that showed the band stretching musically by slowing down.
