Screen Shot 2014-03-25 at 11.44.34 PMFrom the outside, the experimental drug-fueled alt rock of Butthole Surfers and the anarchic performance metal of GWAR aren’t all that close together. However, both bands started in the ’80s with punk as a common thread of their music, and were among the many bands that played Trenton, NJ’s City Gardens in the ’80s and ’90s. When appearing on The Daily Show last night to help promote the book No Slam Dancing, No Stage Diving, No Spikes, the band’s frontman Gibby Haynes paid a proper tribute to Dave Brockie, who died this past Sunday. With “GWAR” written on his arm in honor of Brockie, Haynes’ homage was one of the first things Jon Stewart noticed during the segment. The host also mentioned Brockie by name. Stewart spent several years bartending at City Gardens before going on to be the most trusted name in fake news.
