It started out as a one-off all-star jam on a boat. Then it hit land. And now the metal collective super group Metal Allegiance, featuring David Ellefson of Megadeth, Mike Portnoy of The Winery Dogs, and Alex Skolnick from Testament (along with founder Mark Menghi) have signed a deal with Nuclear Blast Entertainment that will find them releasing an album. As the first two events have shown, more than a few guests will probably drop by to play or sing on the album.
Nuclear Blast Entertainment President Monte Conner says:
“I am incredibly fortunate to be able to work with legendary musicians and personal heroes like David Ellefson, Alex Skolnick and Mike Portnoy, as well as Metal Allegiance founder Mark Menghi. These guys wrote an amazing and diverse record that is 100% pure metal, and lined up some killer guest vocalists and lead guitarists to bring it home in an epic, shredding fashion – just the leads on this record alone will blow people away! Perhaps the coolest part of all is that unlike similar projects in the past that existed as studio-only creations, Metal Allegiance were a touring entity first and have now organically evolved into a studio band that makes albums. I am very grateful to these guys for choosing me and the Nuclear Blast team as the vehicle to bring their music to the metal masses.”
The project came to birth at the Motörhead’s Motörboat featuring members of Anthrax, Testament, Down among others and has since then performed in Anaheim, CA, this past January, with an even more impressive guild of metal musicians. It will be interesting to hear what comes of this, especially since both jams have consisted of the bands covering each other’s songs. An album full of original material from Ellefson and Skolnick sounds pretty exciting, and the next best thing to new music from Testament and Megadeth (maybe even better, actually).
Their debut album is set to be released this Fall.
