The last time I heard Mouth of the Architect’s delectable progressive post-metal they were covering Peter Gabriel on their 2010 EP The Violence Beneath. I completely missed the boat on their 2013 release, Dawning, but it looks like I’ll have some time to catch up before they drop Path of Eight on October 7 (via Translation Loss Records). Actually, I’ll get around to that once I can spend some time with this new one…

MotA debuted “Drown the Old” over at Lambgoat, and it’s emblematic of their measured blend of post-metal and sludge. A two-minute build simmers on this wry, intricate groove  only to boil over in the most crushing way, culminating a Southern-style spin on one of those sludgy swaggering riffs. At a manageable yet dense five minutes, this is perfect to throw on repeat (especially with that bass tone).
