Riding The Lightning Never Felt So Smooth

While we first met her as our favorite bartender at East Village haunt The Library, New York-based singer/songwriter Kendra Morris has been making a name for herself over the last few years. Her debut album, Banshee, will be coming out on Wax Poetics Records on August 28, and we like what we’ve heard so far. While it’s about as far away from metal as possible, her soulful voice reminds us of  a modern update of Amy Winehouse’s 60’s-influenced soul.

An interview with Morris in Inked Magazine mentions that her label is releasing a different cover each week leading up to the release of her album. This week, it’s a take on the title track of Metallica’s Ride the Lightning. It’s a smooth, jazzy trip-hop version that sounds like Portishead re-imagining the band’s 1984 ode to the electric chair with some help from Andy Rehfeldt. In short, Metallica has never sounded sexier.
