02) Smashing Pumpkins – “The Everlasting Gaze”

Going back to my all time favorite band, The smashing pumpkins dominated my cd player throughout the 90s but when they released Machina shortly before their initial split – I had moved on to other things. I was getting into aggressive music and discovering the local crusty punk record store where my early high school bands would play. I gave Machina a chance but it just didn’t click with me at the time. D’arcy was gone and it just wasn’t the same band to me. A few years ago I finally decided to give Machina a chance. A few songs stood out but more than anything the guitar tone and riff from the “Everlasting Gaze” captured my attention. It was tuned low and the distortion was unconventional in that it sounded like a blown out practice amp, which it actually was. The tuning and tone seemed like a fun direction to move towards with our last album. We tuned as low as our guitars would go and layered them until they had that buzzsaw tone I was craving. It’s funny to think that a single song could inspire an entire shift in direction but it did. I’m constantly trying to find new ways to destroy guitar sounds with recording tricks which in turn has become part of the silver snakes creative process. I can thank the “Everlasting Gaze” for that.
