Serj Tankian has announced that he is releasing a music video for his upcoming single “Elasticity” on Thursday, February 4.

The System Of A Down frontman posted a teaser of the Vlad Kaptur-directed video to his Instagram page Monday with the caption “Excited to share with you a snippet from the music video for the title track off my Elasticity EP. Full premiere will be on my YouTube channel this Thursday at 9pm PST. Can’t wait for you all to check it out. The video was produced by my friend, filmmaker @naishuiller and directed by Vlad Kaptur.”

“Elasticity” comes from Tankian’s upcoming EP of the same name. Announced back in May, the release features songs written for System Of A Down, but were ultimately scrapped by the band. Said Tankian told Rolling Stone in December:

“‘Elasticity,’ the songs on that EP were written many years back. When I wrote them, the original concept, for me, was, ‘What rock songs can come out of me right now that I can possibly work with System on?’ So the intention was, actually, to sit down, and I’ve played them for the [other] guys [in System], and we even kind of messed around with some of ’em, and whatnot. And, obviously, we were unable to see eye-to-eye on continuing the future recordings of System.”

He continued:

“So these songs, I decided to finish them myself and release them. And they are really interesting and beautiful songs — going from really heavy type of System-esque type of music to really beautiful, ballady — including pianos and string arrangements and stuff like that. So, it’s quite diverse for just five songs. And thematically, it’s quite diverse as well — a song about terrorism; a song about protests in Armenia years ago; a song about my son Rumi, kind of also cut with the poet Rumi, in a way — it’s an homage to the poet Rumi and his namesake, basically, in a way. And a few other pieces. So it’s kind of all around the place, as everything I do is.”

The “Elasticity” video premiere will launch on Thursday at 9PM PST/12AM EST on Tankian’s YouTube channel. An official release date for the ‘Elasticity’ EP has not been announced yet.

Aside from the upcoming EP, Tankian is releasing a documentary about his activism and work in raising awareness of the 1915 genocide in Armenia, titled Truth To Power. A trailer for the feature-length film was released in January and the film will hit virtual theaters on February 19.

System Of A Down released two new songs in November 2020, “Protect The Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” their first new tracks as a band in 15 years. The tracks were released as a way to “speak of a dire and serious war being perpetrated upon our cultural homelands of Artsakh and Armenia.” A video for “Protect The Land” was also released in November, while the video for “Genocidal Humanoidz” was premiered as part of a livestream in January to raise funds for wounded soldiers in the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. You can still donate to the Aid For Artsakh Campaign through the link on the music video.
