Wednesday night, during The Cult’s maiden trip to Brooklyn Steel, the New York City venue that opened last month, frontman Ian Astbury recalled the band’s first visit to the city, more than 30 years ago: Joey Ramone came backstage, and, towering over them, asked, “What you guys doing after the show?” The band, he said, was astounded, and spent the night getting to know the city with Ramone as their host. “I love your city,” Astbury repeatedly told the audience during a set that toured the band’s career. “He loves it, I just like it,” deadpanned Astbury’s longtime bandmate Billy Duffy, grinning as he tossed guitar picks into the crowd.
