It’s been pretty rewarding to watch Mastodon rise up the ranks over the years ago. 11 years ago, they were opening for Clutch, touring behind their first album. now they’re an automatic for inclusion on metal festivals both here and abroad. They recently played the Netherlands’ Pinkpop Festival in front of a capacity crowd, and it was captured professionally, and you can see that above.

In other Masto-news, the band’s debut album, 2002’s Remission, will be getting a ‘super-deluxe’ reissue by Relapse on August 5th. What’s that mean, given that there was already a deluxe edition that came out in 2003? Plenty, it turns out. The album has been entirely remixed by producer Matt Bayles and remastered by Ed Brooks. The cover art will have a 3D embossing with UV gloss, varnish and foil stamping. You’ll also get another 24 pages of artwork from Paul Romano, who also created the artwork for Leviathan and Blood Mountain. There will also be a double-vinyl box set of the album that will be released alongside the CD. It will be limited to 2,000 copies and have an etched d-side. If you’re a fan of the band’s last two albums and aren’t familiar with Mastodon’s first album, you’re going to be very confused by Remission. It’s easily their heaviest album, but you can see glimpses of the band that they’ve become on it.
