1. Metallica – December 6, 1997

Metallica’s appearance on SNL came during their most commercial period, aka during the Load / Reload era. Interestingly enough, though, Metallica’s first time on the show was supposed to come in 1987, but they had to cancel after James Hetfield supposedly broke his wrist following a skateboarding incident. While most probably would’ve preferred to see the post-Master Of Puppets era of Metallica perform on the show, it’s still pretty cool to see them play “Fuel” and “The Memory Remains” with Marianne Faithfull (and to be introduced by Nathan Lane, nonetheless).
