Last week, Metallica’s WorldWired tour drew to a close in North America. How successful was it? Extremely. First of all, everyone that bought a ticket automatically got a copy of Hardwired… To Self Destruct, so in and of itself, that’s a lot of copies of the album, which has sold over 1 million copies. But that’s nothing compared to what the tour itself grossed on the road. The latest Billboard Boxscore breaks down just how much money the tour has been making, and it’s fascinating. Granted, the numbers below are just the gross, not the net, so counting in production costs, travel, management fees and a ton of other factors, the band doesn’t make as much, but that’s still an insane amount of money. It’s going to be a long time before there’s another Metallica, but if you’re going to aim to be one of the most successful bands of the next 30 years, here’s what to aim for.

Meanwhile, with the tour over, Canadian radio station CFOX asked guitarist Kirk Hammett what his favorite song from the album was to play live. It turns out it’s “Halo on Fire”

“I really like playing ‘Halo on Fire.’ There’s just something about that song that just like… We established a mood really quickly, and it seems like the audience is with us every step of the way. Because when we get to the chorus, [the audience] is singing the chorus with us. It’s cool. It’s a really cool, fun song to play on guitar as well.”

There you have it. Although he could have said “all of them. I’m rich!” and then fired a pair of guns in the air like Yosemite Sam or the rich Texan guy from The Simpsons and we would’ve understood. Here’s how much money they made, and you can check out the full interview below:
