There’s no denying the impact Ozzy Osbourne has had in music (let alone metal) via Black Sabbath and his solo career. However, it’s hard to deny that the Prince Of Darkness is as highly noted for the crazy stuff he’s done (both on and off stage) as he is for the music he’s recorded. And 30 years ago today, January 20, one of Ozzy’s most legendary incidents happened.

It was during a show in Des Moines, Iowa in 1982 where Ozzy picked up and bit the head of what he thought was a rubber bat. To his surprise, though, it turned out to be a real live bat thrown onstage by a fan. One rabies shot later, and the rest as they say is history.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), video of the famous bat biting incident has not been recovered. However, to celebrate its 30th anniversary, we thought we’d share an interview we found of Ozzy shortly after it all went down. During the 1982 interview with Night Flight, Ozzy explains that the bat tasted “salty” and something else he couldn’t say on the air. Hearing how freaked out the interviewer off camera gets is enough reason to watch the interview, which you can see above.
