Eff a box of chocolates, with Norway’s Shining, you truly never know what you’re going to get. The band have basically evolved from a jazz odyssey to a surprisingly heavy band that sounds Killing Joke-like at times. Oh yeah, and lots of saxophone. Their last album, International Blackjazz Society, split the difference, but their signing to Spinefarm for that album might have influenced their next album, which is tentatively out in Spring. The band have released a track, “Everything Dies,” that sounds like a straight-ahead active rock song. There’s no saxophone, no weird jazzy interludes, really nothing that’s made them stand out over the course of their 16 year career. That being said, it’s not a bad song at all. It’s catchy and straightforward, and if it brings them new fans, so be it. Those fans will be pretty confused once they listen to the rest of their catalog, however. And they’ll probably lose some longtime fans if the entire album sounds like this.
