Dr. Michael Bishop, whom you may know as vocalist and bassist Michael “Blothar” Bishop of GWAR, recently gave a TEDx talk at Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage in Richmond, VA. Once known as Beefcake The Mighty, Dr. Bishop speaks about the origins of the band, their multiple members, the concept of slavery within the band, and how that concept works in a city like Richmond, VA.

Said Bishop,

“The idea also portrays privilege. It portrays GWAR’s identity, in that, in our narrative, slavery is an option. Just like it was an option for us to live and work in Jackson Ward, and it might not have been that way for the other people that lived there.”

GWAR will be playing Slipknot’s Knotfest in October, and they’ll be doing it without Kim Dylla, who was surprised that she was let go by the band back in May.
