Last week, rumors of System Of A Down getting back together were gaining strength. Some European festivals, like Germany’s Rock im Park and Rock am Ring, had let news of SOAD’s involvement slip. But this morning, the band released an official statement, confirming what fans have been waiting for since they went on hiatus in 2006.

The statement said the following:

“We are excited to announce that System will be playing some dates together in 2011. We also want to thank you for your loyalty and support, not only to System Of A Down, but to all of our solo efforts as well. We have no master plan of sorts — we are playing these shows simply because we want to play together again as a band and for you, our amazing fans. We look forward to seeing all of you!”

So far, the band has only scheduled European appearances during the Summer of 2011, including a headlining performance at the Download Festival. However, more dates are expected to be revealed soon. You can see all of the shows announced so far after the jump. As part of the announcement, the Download Festival posted live footage of the band performing at the festival in 2005 online (which you can see above).

While the band says they’re getting back together just to play again, it’s not exactly like their solo projects have sold so well on their own. Whatever their motives are, though, it’s simply great news that arguably one of the most unique metal bands (and one of my personal favorites) is getting back together. The only thing that would suck about this is if System Of A Down doesn’t end up playing in the States at all. However, it would be hard to believe that  they won’t perform at least a few shows in the U.S. at all, even if it doesn’t happen until the following Summer. For the mean time, though, fingers crossed.

We will keep you up to date when more is revealed. For now, you can see the dates that have been announced so far below.
