A few weeks ago, Mastodon began alluding to a psychedelic music video for “Asleep in the Deep” spawned from the minds of artist Skinner (the artist behind the mesmerizingly beautiful, yet semi-terrifying cover art on Once More ‘Round the Sun) and Shane Morton, who we all know as the special effects genius involved in Too Many Cooks.
Does that make you extremely nervous? Have you ever wondered what the effects of catnip might be like? If you answered “yes” to either of those questions, then prepare to experience an epic journey when the video premieres late tonight/early this morning on Adult Swim at 4 a.m. Can’t wait that long or don’t want to permanently destroy your sleeping pattern? Well, look no further because we’ve got it right here right now, and so does Adult Swim.

The story goes that Skinner has held a long term curiosity as to what our beloved, yet oh-so mysterious house cats do while we’re asleep. Taking things to an extreme, Mastodon’s video takes their fans on an adventure through ancient catacombs and volcanoes to fight battles against a royal bullfrog and a three headed rat king. As the saying goes, curiosity kills the cat — well, in this case, rat.
For those who are beyond stoked on this epic short film, Mastodon is offering a special “Asleep in the Deep” bundle to celebrate the premiere. Included in this package is an Asleep in the Deep t-shirt (featuring everybody’s favorite feline hero) and a 24″x36″ retro-styled movie poster inspired by the video itself.
